Coniston Cup Grand Final Thirroul Thunder played in their first Grand Final today and although they eventually lost 0 - 4 to Tarrawanna, the team put up a great effort and showed plenty of potential for the future. It was a warm afternoon with a strong north-easterly wind dominating the game. The Thunder started well keeping Tarrawanna in check and with the wind at their backs the team was able to make deep probing attacks. It was not until well into the half that Tarrawanna was able to mount enough pressure to score the opening goal. Despite the setback the team's defence remained solid and was able hold out Tarrawanna until late in the half when a finely worked move resulted in a well taked goal - half time and the score 0 - 2. The team's worst patch of play was just after the break when they took a bit too long to get organised and allowed the opposition to sneak in another goal. Fortunately the team settled down and were able to mount some of the best attacking moves of the game and although Tarrawanna managed another goal late in the game it was clearly the Thunder's section of the match. Taking in consideration that Tarrawanna are a Premier League club the Thunder's performance was very encouraging, there's still abit of work to do but based on today's effort we will do well when the competition kicks off next week. Up front Ben French was always a threat when on the field and was unluckly on several occassions, but the best effort was a header from Garth Bowley that came back off the crossbar - see picture at the bottom of the page. |
