SUMMER SEVENS

Thirroul Summer Sevens - Match Roundup

Round 1

The opening matches saw Cabbage Utd take on the short priced favourites Bintang Bandits and the Sandon Point Lads taking on The Irons. The game between Cabbage and the Bandits was a cracker with the result being no big surprise, 3 - 1 to the Bandits, a convincing opening to their 08/09 campaign and enough to see them shoot straight to No. 1 on the ladder. The clash of the two green teams saw Sandon Point in a tight tussle with The Irons with both teams eventually sharing the points at 2 goals a piece.

The 7pm games saw the Young Guns take on the Toads, a disappointing result for the author of this blurb, with the Young guns squeezing in a ridiculously flukey goal from the half time kick off. The ball took a wicked deflection that was the eventual difference between the two teams, 3 - 2 to the "Guns" (Debateable)... On the other field, late entrants Tim O'Brien FC edged past The Growlers 2 - 1.

The final games in the opening round matched the Gibson Park Rangers with Cominatchyahh with the GPR's coming out surprising 2 - 0 winners. From all accounts the GPR's managed to sneak in two goals against the run of play while the young Woonona lads dominated posession and pestered the GPR goal all game but were unable to find an opening. Thats football lads. In the other match the Chunder Boiz could not be separated from Sluzzy's Australia FC, the score finished at 1 - 1, although there were 14 wayward shots which could have impacted upon the scoreline, if Sluzzy's strikers were on target!

Round 2

The first 2 games saw The Chunderboiz taking on The Irons and The Growlers battling Cominatchyahh. The Irons proved too strong in their game against The Chunderboiz coming out solid 2 - 0 winners. Cominatchyahh after a slow start last week, reversed the trend to put two past the Growlers and emerge 2 - 0 victors themselves. Some entertain football on both pitches.

The 7pm games paired Sandon Point with The Toads and Cabbage Utd with Sluzzys Australia. In the first game Sandon Point raced to an early 2 goal lead only for The Toads to snatch one back just before and just after the interval for a 2 - 2 draw. Sluzzys Australia dominated Cabbage Utd as they put 4 past the young lads. One particular player from the Sluzzys Australia asked me to give Cabbage a wrap for their performance as Cabbage are playing against opponents well older than them. This writer thinks that the particular player from Sluzzy's might be getting a bit soft with old age and will encourage his team to target this as a possible weakness!!

The late games saw a flurry of goals finding the net with now unbackable favourites Bintang Bandits smashing Tim O'Brien F.C 7 - 2 to remain at the top of the table from The Young "Guns" (still not over round 1 guys) on goal difference. Sort yourself out with a team name Timmy, yours is obviously bad luck. The Young Guns went some way to prove they are not flukey winners with 2 deflected goals (typical) and a brilliant solo effort by Garth (drop that $20 round anytime mate) to defeat the Gibson Park Senior Citizens Club 3 - 0. Being 3 times younger than the GPR's, one would expect 3 more goals from the YG's...

Remember that the bowlo serves 1/2 price Schnitzels Wednesday night so why not pop over and grab dinner and a beer after your game??

Round 3

The early games featured Cabbage Utd V Sandon Point. The point lads dominated from start to finish, Simon Zadkovich grabbing a hatty as he ran riot on the "Cabbage" defence, 4 - 1 the final score. The other game was a closer encounter with The Young Guns true to form scraping past the Growlers 4 - 3. Jake scoring a hatty in yet another scabby victory for the Guns and another defeat to the Growlers despite Sargo doing his best grabbing all three for The Growlers himself . The boys in blue are struggling to rekindle the form that won them the local pub league a few years back and only goal difference keeping them from the wooden spoon.

7pm games saw the Chunder Boiz taking on The Toads, now aptly renamed the Bezerkeley Boys (sponsored and dressed by Illawarra Sports High, Berkeley). The Chunder Boiz got out to a flyer scoring 2 goals in quick succession however with a new name comes renewed spirit and the Bezerkeley Boys fought back strongly to take the match 4 - 2 leaving the Chunder Boiz dreaming of what might have been... Ben French and Matty Davidson each grabbing a brace. The other match saw title favourites Bintang Bandits taking on finals hopefuls Sluzzy's Australia FC. The Bandits winning 2 - 1 in a tight encounter and holding on to top spot.

The late games matched the GPR's against The Irons and Cominatchyahh against Tim O'Brien FC (read the 7pm report and take a hint re the name change Tim). One would think that at an average age of nearly 50, the "elderly" would prefer to play when they can actually see the ball. The Gibbo Park Senior Citizens Club taking another hammering with The Irons taking full advantage of the GPR's being out past their bed time winning 3 - 0. Try requesting a 6pm game gents. Timmy and Crew had a tighter affair against Cominatchyahh with the match ending 3 - 3. A tidy change of form from the pasting Tim and the boys got last week, well done.

Please ensure that you all forget to bring a drink this week and buy one from the lovely canteen ladies... Happy 21st birthday for the 18th November Danielle!!

Round 4

With the comp well & truly underway, the table is starting to really sort itself out between the contenders and the pretenders. The 6pm games featured a mixture of both, with Cabbage United taking on the Chunder Boiz and the Bintang Bandits pitched against Sandon Point. The Cabbage lads took another beating at the hands of the Chunder Boiz going down 3 - 0. Cabbage well and truly living up to there name, sitting stone motherless last on the table. The second game was a battle between title favourites the Bintang Bandits and Sandon Point. Both teams were undefeated coming into this match and that's the way it stayed, the match ending in a 2 -2 stalemate.

7pm games saw Sluzzy's Australia Vs the newly (and aptly) named "Wombat Express". Also featuring were the struggling Growlers taking on The Irons. In the first game Sluzzy's struggled past the Wombat Express with a tight 2 - 1 victory to the bright yellow pansies... Matty Cirson keeping their finals hopes alive with a brace. With the Sluzzy's sitting mid table, the pressure is mounting on the competition organiser to lead his team in their run home to the finals, we all await with anticipation (and doubt). The winless Growlers went closer than ever against the Irons however they couldn't break their hoodoo losing 4 - 3, only Cabbage keeping them from the spoon at this stage.

The 8pm games matched Cominatchyahh and The Young Guns and the Bezerkely Boys against the GPR's. The first match was a close one with The Young Guns needing a win to elevate themselves to the No. 1 spot and Cominatchyahh needing a win to boost their confidence and their position on the ladder. The Young Guns choked, showing their true form with the match ending up 1 - 1 and wondering what could have been. In the other match complimentary tissues were handed out post match to the Gibson Park Queens... losing 3 - 2 to the mighty Bezerkeley Boys. Not even countless whinging toward the referee mid match could get them over the line against the BB's with the A C Milan immitators sneaking home in (I'll be honest) a tough encounter with the elderly. Their "play on the break tactics" proved fruitful coming back from 2 - 0 down to level it at 2 - 2. A glorious goal from Dan Locke however, proving the decider as the BB's held on to post their 2nd consecutive win.

Round 5

The early games saw Cominatchyahh up against The Irons and the Bintang Bandits taking on the Chunder Boiz. The Irons kept their undefeated record in tact, however a draw was the final result with the match ending at 1 - 1. The Bintang Bandits again showing their class with a resounding 4 - 1 victory over strugglers the Chunder Boiz. The Bintang Bandits moving into $1.20 to take the title now, almost at unbackable odds.

The 7pm matches saw Sluzzy's Australia taking on Sandon Point and the Bezerkely Boys up against the winless Growlers. The first match saw the Sluzzy's being convincingly beaten by a stronger Point outfit 2 - 0. The Point still unbeaten and only several draws dampening their position on the table to 5th. The Bezerkeley Boys made it three wins in a row hammering the woeful Growlers 4 - 0. The Growlers couldn't even muster a purr against the improving Bezerkeley Boys, the BB's now looking at a possible top 4 finish if they can continue their winning ways.

At 8pm, Cabbage Utd took on the GPR's and the Young Guns matched up against The Wombat Express. Believe it or not, but the Gibson Park Rangers have won another game. Yes, the Gibbo Park Rangers defeated Cabbage Utd 3 - 1 in a close encounter, the young lads being taught a lesson by the "more than experienced" GPR's, well done gents. The Young Guns held there position on the ladder with 3 - 1 victory over the Wombat Express, god only knows a) how they are doing it and b) how long they can keep this flukey run.

With Christmas coming up, it might be a good idea to organise to have a few beers at the bowlo with your team members after our game on the 17th December. We hope to see as many faces back at the bowlo for a drink to celebrate the festive season!!
