Thunderbirds Thirties
Round 5
Thirroul Thunderbirds 1 - Woonona 1
This was a rare and rewarding opportunity to catch the Thunderbird Thirties in action. Although the result indicates a fairly even match it would be fair to say that then Thunderbirds had the better of most of the game but just couldn't make the most of their opportunities. In the first half the team played well and up front Linda Kunjasich, in particular was a constant threat. At the back the defense marshaled by Kay Grew kept Woonona under control for most of the half, but an attack against the run of play saw them grab the opening goal. Despite being a goal up Woonona were not a serious threat for the rest of the half and the team went into the break 0 - 1 down.
The second half was played in a similar vein to the first as the defense was able to cope with anything Woonona tried and even survived a penalty attempt that went wide. Up front Jenny Beattie, Linda Kunjasich and Leah Henderson were all trying their hardest the get back into the match and despite good attacking play just couldn't find the back of the net. Even a penalty awarded to the team went astray. However, the team didn't give up and late in the game Leah Henderson slipped past the goalie and cover defenders to score the equaliser.

Round 2
Thirroul Thunderbirds 3 - Bulli 3
It was an exciting match for the senior Thunderbirds in their first home match of the season. The warm weather was going to test the players' endurance but after a great effort against Dapto the previous week the team was up for it. The team started well and seemed capable of holding Bulli but a couple of lapses in the first half allowed the opposition to grab two goals and go into the break up 0 - 2.
The second half was a much better affair as the team lifted and put immense pressure on Bulli. As they continued to press forward it was only a matter of time before they broke through for a goal. Eventually they came in quick succession as Leah Henderson scored twice in a matter of minutes. Having drawn level they team pushed for a winner after some hard work by Jenny Shelton and Linda Kunjasich saw Linda score the third goal. The team then worked hard to hold their lead but unfortunately late in the match Bulli pulled back a goal to end the match even 3 - 3. Overall a great effort by the team especially in coming back from two goals down. Jenny Shelton and Linda Kunjasich were busy for the whole match while Leah Henderson is showing a talent for getting into scoring positions and making the most of them, while at the back Sonya Williams is settling into her new sport brilliantly. With the ANZAC day break and bye the week after hopefully the team will be able to make the most of the break and come back refreshed.

Association Cup - Round 2
Having won their first round match, when Russell Vale forfeited, the Thirties moved on to their round 2 match with Helensburgh. Unfortunately late notification of the match left the team decidedly short of players, with only 12 available in each half - one player left as another arrived. Although it was an early start the lack of any sea breeze made for uncomfortable conditions. The game started well as the team attempted to find its feet in its first full game of the season. Unfortunately, the rustiness soon showed as Helensburgh, with a full complement of reserves was able to outrun our defense and start the scoring. To their credit the team never stopped trying and although Helensburgh was able to add further goals some good attacking work by Linda Kunjasich and Jenny Shelton in the second half should have resulted in at least a couple of goals. Still as the first serious hit out of the season it gave a lot of encouragement. With a full team available and a few games under the belt the team will be more than competitive in the coming season. For the record the final result was a 6 - 0 win to Helensburgh
Special thanks to Kay Grew and Leah Henderson who filled in as goal keeper and to Clare Ward and Tara-Jane Johnson who helped out on the day.

Despite the score line the Thunderbird 30s showed enough skill to sometimes leave the opposition flat-out. For more match photos click here or on the picture above
