THIRROUL THUNDERBIRDS

Master Builders Competition

Round 16 Vs Dandaloo
Won 2 - 0

Round 16 was at home against Dandaloo and what a game. Dandaloo had beaten us convincingly in the first round but to our teams shear grit and determination held Dandaloo to nil all at half time. The second half was more of the same until the pressure started to tell on the opposition and a brilliant strike from Kel put us in front, which resulted in Dandaloo coming at us with everything, but again the girls brilliantly held their own. Then a long range shot from Jenny Shelton sliding down the back of the net put the game in our control. I cannot put into words the way the girls played it was absolutely fantastic to watch. Kay, Corrina, Tara and Lizzy had absolute blinders in the defensive line. Leah was dominate in all positions, Jenny Shelton attacking the ball at every opportunity in the mid field ably assisted by Jess and Sara. Holly, Bernie and Leah were outstanding on either flank with Jenny Beattie and Kel up the front getting the job done. As always our super star goal keeper finished with a clean slate with some outstanding reflex saves. Absolutely fantastic girls you should be very proud of yourselves.

Round 15 Vs Helensburgh
Won 3 - 0

Round 15 found us at Helensburgh with manager Ros in charge and the girls were in control from the onset coming off the field at half time 3 nil up. Two goals from Jenny Beattie followed by another from Kel. Second half saw the play mostly in Helensburgh half but we couldn’t add to the score. It was a solid performance by the girls with everybody playing their part and everybody was happy to see Meg have a run on the field for the first time this season.  Well done girls.

Round 6 - Vs Bulli (1)
Lost 1 - 3

Nothing but praise can be directed to the girls with the way they played and conducted themselves. The girls matched everything Bulli had in the first half until a lapse in concentration and a mad scramble in front of goals gave Bulli their first goal. The second goal followed minutes later with the aid of a clear hand ball seen by everybody including the one eyed coach. The second half started with the girls pressuring all the time with no luck then another goal was conceded with Bulli in a clear off side position. With the refereeing and conduct of the Bulli players leaving a lot to be desired the girls just continued to play soccer, eventually Kelly decided that she had had enough of Bulli's attitude and from a right back position did a solo effort beating several players finishing with the ball in the back of the net. This game we can not single out any players for special mention as the whole team played a brilliant game and with the right attitude and I cannot praise them enough.

Round 5 - Vs Dandaloo
Lost 0 - 5

Due to Mothers Day commitments we were lacking in numbers, most of our defenders. With Dandaloo having a couple of speedsters up the front they became a bit too hard to contain resulting in our 5 - 0 loss. To the credit of the girls they tried their best and the game was a good learning curve. Can’t wait to play Dandaloo again with a full squad. Well done Meg who was under pressure the whole game.

Round 4 - Vs Helensburgh
Won 4 - 0

The 3rd Division broke through for their first win of the season with a four goal win over Helensburgh. While it wasn't actually an easy win as you can see from the shot below the Thunderbirds keeper wasn't too busy.
Here is the coach's full match report

With the goal keeper (Megs) suffering a severe hangover the team must have decided to keep the ball away from her and that ’s exactly what they did, with 90% of the play in Helensburgh's half. After several close shaves the pressure finally told and the goals started coming freely. First from Linda with one of her trademark runs up the side  with a sweet hit to find the back of the net. Next two came from Jenny Beattie, first from quick thinking by a miss timed Helensburgh goal kick  which saw the ball whistling straight back passed the goalies head. The second was from a beautiful first touch effort by an equally brilliant cross by Linda (looked like English Premier League stuff) and the forth coming from Kelly with an individual and determined run from wide beating several players to finish off with a solid strike. Absolutely fantastic result for their first win.  Kay, Terri, Liz, Tara, in defense were brilliant. Centres, Leah, Sara, equally so and fantastic effort from Corrina on the wing. Special mention to Jenny Shelton for her untiring efforts and organisation on the field.

Round 3 - Vs South Coast United
Lost 1 - 2

Last week torrential rain this week gale force winds. With the wind at their backs South Coast got a goal mid way through the first half to make them 1 up at half time but the girls battled on in awful conditions. With the wind in our favour in the 2nd half a well timed cross from Corrina resulted in Jenny Beattie leveling the score. The game remained tied for most of the half but after numerous stoppages an untimely lapse in concentration that allowed South Coast to get the deciding goal. Special mention to fill in goalie Bernie who put in a terrific effort in the worse possible conditions for a goalie. Well done to all, a good team effort.

Round 2 - Vs Balgownie
Lost 2 - 3

Having a bye the first round probably made all the difference as we just needed a little more match practice. Well done to all the girls in a game that was played in extreme conditions. The field resembling 2 duck ponds at either end and a lake in the middle, snorkels and flippers would have been more appropriate than boots and shin pads.
The game started off quite even with our girls 2-1 up at half time, but the Balgownie side (a much younger side than we expected) used the worsening conditions to their advantage in the 2nd half plus a mistake by the coach had players out of position enabling them to level the score quite early in the 2nd half. As conditions worsened ball control became a matter of luck adding to this the fact that we didn’t have any linesman the deciding goal from Balgownie left a lot to be desired.
Special mention to first time players Leah, Corrina, Christine and Sara who stepped up to the mark. Also to Linda for scoring both of our goals, Jenny Shelton who was all over the field and Megan in goals who made several saves without the aid of a buoyancy device and to Tara in her first game back who was rock solid in defense. As the ref stated at the end of the game a draw would have been more appropriate.
Well done girls a terrific team spirit and everyone is to be commended.
