Thunderbirds set for Julie Porter Cup

Thirroul Thunderbirds are proud to take part in the inaugural Julie Porter Cup, named after local Matildas legend and club junior, Julie Porter.

Julie broke the barrier and caused a stir when she started playing in the boy’s competition in under 10s for Thirroul Junior Soccer Club. In 1978, she played in the first Illawarra Women’s competition.

Porter was a member of the first women's team from neighbouring Bulli in the inaugural Illawarra women's competition in 1978, a competition that was possibly the best populated in the country, offering football for 22 teams over 2 divisions.

In 1981, Julie made her international debut for the Matildas. She went on to represent Australia in the green and gold 19 times and was the Illawarra’s first Matildas representative.

Emi Skopal, Head of the Women’s Football Council said the Julie Porter Cup was a welcome addition to the FSC calendar.

“Initially the concept was for a Pre Season Cup, however the recent wet weather has meant we will play the tournament during the first few rounds of the competition proper,” Skopal said. “ With the introduction of this tournament, we wanted to honour Julie and are proud that we can acknowledge her though this event”.

Julie Porter said: “I am deeply honoured”.

The 2022 Julie Porter Cup, will incorporate Division 1 women’s teams from Albion Park White Eagles, Kiama Quarriers, Shellharbour, Warilla, Bulli, Thirroul, UOWFC and Woonona.

The first round will kick off on Sunday, April 10, with all games taking place at Ian McLennan Park.

The Thunderbirds play Woonona at 4.20pm.

Football South Coast are delighted to honour Julie’s incredible football achievements with this new tournament and are excited to add to the Women’s Football calendar for 2022 alongside the existing Bonnie Lassie Cup, which is in its 44th year in 2022.
